Beer Classics Vol. I

Complexities Of A Simple Pleasure

Summer is a time that unifies the beer drinking public, bringing us all under one golden roof.  During this season anyone with a throat can bond in the appreciation of the subtle wonders of Pilsner beer.
It’s hard to argue with the refreshing qualities this beer was built to possess.
The Pilsner, when brewed to style, features a light grainy malt character and a crisp, slightly bitter taste that completes a robust mouth feel and golden hue that should shine like no other beer. The Pilsner, a lager beer, is fermented for twice as long as an ale so, when done correctly, it’s a thoughtful process that can deliver terrific results.
Head over to Happy Village (1059 N. Wolcott Ave) on a Saturday afternoon and order a Hamm’s in a can.  Hamm’s is an old classic still being brewed by the SABMiller, with limited distribution mostly here in the Midwest. Don’t discuss its subtleties or analyze the flavor profile of this beer, just enjoy it in your own mind for what it is. There’s something special about tilting back a can when it’s above 70 degrees.  “The Beer Refreshing,” as their slogan touts, will only run you a couple of bucks and the few table tennis matches you’ll play will be free.  Hit some balls and head out to patio for summertime moments shared with your can of beer.
I have a friend that brews for Victory Brewing Co in Pennsylvania.  It’s a great brewing company that knocks out a generous lot of sturdy beers.  One that is consistently of note is their Prima Pils.  This is a bright experience in every way, and is sure to complement your summer successfully.  The folks at Quenchers (2401 N. Western Ave) will have the Prima Pils in bottles, and if you’re lucky, they’ll be pouring it on draught.  If you want, think about what it is exactly that you taste in the beer.  Try to pick out the hop flavor and how it layers with the malt character.  Move the beer around in your mouth and notice the different qualities that are present.  They’ve done a great job of managing that experience for you.   Pairing Pilsners with Chicago summer is one of the finer things.  Enjoy.
